The highs and lows of Queen Elizabeth II’s majestic reign

SIXTY years after the Queen ascended to the throne, she continues to inspire.
Her long reign has seen the golden promise of the post-war era to the austerity of the early Cold War years, the prosperity of the swinging ‘60s, the new liberal attitudes of the 70s and the rapid social change in the decades since.
Ruling with incredible passion and commitment, the Queen underakes extensive public duties at home and abroad, including advising 12 British Prime Ministers — from Winston Churchill to David Cameron.
As head of state, she has travelled widely across the globe — visiting Australia 16 times — and welcomed monarchs and presidents to the UK, entertaining them with full pomp and pageantry at Windsor or Buckingham Palace.
The Queen’s own family has been touched by upheaval over the last twenty years and looks set to end her reign in happier times.
Her grandchildren bring a promise of a restored future for the monarchy — Prince William and Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge, may well replicate the close, united family the Queen knew as a child.
