Opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi had revealed throughout the day that her party, the National League of Democracy, was in the lead, often with 70 per cent of the votes.
But it was just confirmed that the opposition party has infact won the election, with the current ruling party’s chairman conceding defeat.
Earlier in the day, Suu Kyi said it was “still a bit early to congratulate our condidates who will be the winners”.
The NLD had thousands of monitors deployed across Myanmar during the vote, keeping track as each polling station closed and publicly announced its totals.
It is the first free election in 25 years.
An official confirmation from Myanmar’s electoral commission is expected soon.
Crowds sang songs dedicated to Aung San Suu Kyi, as hundreds waited outside opposition party headquarters for confirmation of her historic election victory.
Lyrics to the song, called “The Strong Peacock,” in reference to the party’s symbol, became popular with supporters nationwide during the campaign period.
They sang: “She is the people’s leader that the whole world knows... Write your own history in your hearts for our future, so the dictatorship will end. Go, go, go (away) dictatorship.”
